Dear SCCCS Supporter,

We plan to apply and secure start up grant funding through state apportionment opportunities given in the state budget. However, this grant funding may be eliminated. The California Charter Schools Association, who SCCCS is a developer with, recently sent out this important information and has asked for support to make sure this important funding is not eliminated.

Specifically, CCSA has explained that there has been:

“A major set back in the Capitol with our top budget priority. In a 2-1 vote, the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Education removed $20 million from the Governor’s budget proposal for charter school start-up funding. Senators Marty Block (D-San Diego) and Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica) voted to remove the funds, while Senator John Moorlach (R-Costa Mesa) voted to retain the funds.

During the month of May, more than 500 charter school leaders, parents, teachers, supporters, students and alumni held more than 120 meetings with legislators to ask for their support of this funding. With over 158,000 students on charter school waitlists, and potentially more than 150 school developers interested in opening schools in 2017, start-up funds are critical to sustaining growth and momentum across the state. Start-up funds help secure facilities, hire and train staff, and buy books and supplies for students.
This fight is not over! On Monday, May 23 the Assembly Budget Subcommittee will vote on whether to include the Governor’s recommended $20 million dollars in charter school start-up funds.
It is absolutely critical that Speaker Rendon and members of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee know just how important these start-up funds are to charter schools and charter school students.”

As a SCCCS supporter, we ask that you please consider quickly and easily letting legislators know how important this funding is. CCSA has created a campaign that takes less than a minute to complete. Here are the details:
